The Illini fought back to overcome a 15 point second half deficit when Head s 3-pointer tied the game at 70-70 with only 2:39 to go. North Carolina regained the lead; when Marvin Williams tipped in a lay-up attempt by Rashad McCants with 1:39 left; and kept it until the end. North Carolina defeated Illinois 75-70; winning its fourth NCAA championship and coach Roy Williams first title. Sean May s 26 total points; mirrored his father Scott May s 26 points in leading Indiana to the 1976 national title.
